Persons commanded 31 Division when it was deployed to New Guinea in March 1944. His
division was a National Guard
formation from the Deep South and Persons himself was a National Guard
officer. Like many Guard commanders, he was relieved by a Regular Army
officer when his leadership was
judged wanting, in September 1944.
