The R2s were Maritime
Commission C2 hulls
converted for use as civilian refrigerator ships. Unlike Navy
provisions storeships, they were arranged to transport the maximum
cargo from port to port ("solid
pack") rather than the ability to replenish a succession of warships
("optional discharge"). However, a single such refrigerator ship
could deliver enough food to feed 90,000 men for 30 days.
