The Soya was ordered by the Russiansbut requisitioned by the Japanese Navy at the start of the Second World War in 1939. She was completed as an ammunition ship/icebreaker for service in the northernmost reaches of Japan's empire, but ended up serving mostly in the South Seas. She survived the war and had a distinguished postwar career, including as an Antarctic research ship. She is now a museum ship at the Museum of Maritime Science in Tokyo.
