Submarine tenders were large vessels equipped with extensive machine shops, torpedo magazines, and other storage holds. They supplied and performed minor repairs on submarines at advance bases. Their machine shops occasionally saw other uses, as when the Canopus was trapped at Manila Bay early in the war and went to work repairing infantry weapons. Canopus also improvised small gunboats for use around the Bataan coast. These were known to the Army as “Mickey Mouse battleships.”
