Tachibana commanded 109 Division in the Bonin Islands in 1945. He was something of a traditionalist: A visiting officer discovered in early 1945 that Tachibana was studying Japanese military tactics dating back as far as the 16th century in the belief that they held the key to victory in the Pacific. Tachibana also permitted (and may have ordered) the execution and cannibalism of captured American aircrew. For this he was hanged after the war.
