Takashina commanded 29 Division, which was transferred from Kwantung Army to 31 Army at Guam in February 1944. The division concentrated around Apra and the Orote Peninsula and thus was the main defense force against the American landings that month. The division made a final desperate counterattack on 25 July 1944 and was virtually annihilated. Takashina himself was killed by machine gun fire from an American tank on 28 July 1944.
