Takehara commanded the infantry group of 6 Division in China during the Third Battle of Changsha. He was later promoted to lieutenant general and took command of 49 Division in Korea from its activation in January 1944. The division deployed to Pegu in July 1944 and was held in reserve, with elements being dispatched where needed. By April 1945 it was down to 1600 men, and by the time it retreated across the Sittang in July 1945, there were just 300 men left in the division.
