Tasmania is a large island (26,200 square miles) off the southeast coast of Australia. It is the smallest state in the Australian commonwealth. The island is mountainous with a cool, somewhat dry climate. The capitol and major port is Hobart.
There are numerous mineral resources here, including lead, zinc, and tungsten. There is considerable hydroelectric potential, and the Tarraleah plant was coming online at the time war broke out. Postwar, Hobart became an important center for production of aluminum and other nonferrous metals.
