Tokuyama (131.809E
34.052N) was a small naval
base on the Inland Sea
that was the main Japanese Navy fuel
depot. Storage capacity was 3 million tons. The population was
about 38,400 in 1945.
The port was mined on
5 May 1945. About 20 percent of the port was destroyed in a B-29 raid on 10 May 1945 in support of
the Okinawa battle. It is
likely that the raid was motivated in part by signals
intelligence: The final sortie of Yamato was from
this port. Eventually about 0.47 square miles (1.22 km2)
or 37% of the city was
destroyed in raids.
