Toyama (137.22E 36.70N) is a city and rail junction on the northwest coast of Honshu. The population was 127,860 in 1944. With abundant electrical power from the nearby Kurobe hydroelectric project, the city was a center of aluminum production. There were also important ball bearing and machine tool industries.
On 1 August 1942, the city was bombed by 173 B-29s of 73
Bombardment Wing, which dropped 1466 tons of bombs and incendiaries. The city was
virtually wiped off the map, with 99.5 percent of its urban area
