The XBs were
completed in 1949-41 and a number were allocated to the Indian Ocean, operating
primarily out of Penang. They were
minelaying submarines with
double hulls, the mines and reserve
torpedoes being stored between the pressure and outer hulls. They were
more often used as supply ships than as minelayers, with the cargo
containers stored in the mine tubes.
