Yamagata Kurihanao (also rendered Yamagata Rikao or Yamagata Tsuyuo) commanded 21 Independent Mixed Brigade at Buna in early December 1942. When Sananda fell on 14 January 1943, Yamagata escaped in a landing craft, after allegedly throwing out wounded Japanese soldiers.
It seems likely that Yamagata was the "Major
General Yamada" mentioned in Morison's history as the defender of
Finschhafen in late 1943.
Yamagata commanded 26 Division under 35 Army at Leyte, arriving early November 1944. The division was virtually destroyed within a month.
