Yoshinaka commanded 86 Division in the critical Ariake Bay
area of southern Kyushu in 1945.
This was where the Japanese
correctly believed the main force of the Allied invasion would fall. Fortifications were 80 to 90
percent complete by August 1945, and Yoshinaka was confident his force
could crush the invader at the water's edge.
