Yuma (114.60W 32.66N) is a town in southwest Arizona, very close to the borders with California and Mexico.
The federal government leased 640 acres (259 hectares) for an airfield here in 1928. However, Fly Field was used only sporadically until 1941, when construction began on the first permanent runways. Construction of facilities greatly accelerated after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and by 1943 the airfield was a major training base for new pilots.
