The Acastia
or "A" class of
destroyers were completed in 1930-1931. The design dated to July 1926
and incorporated novel boiler
technology and minesweeping
gear, but were very light on antisubmarine
equipment, having no sonar nor depth
charge throwers as completed. The design emphasis seems to have been on
torpedo attack capability and improved habitability. The minesweeping
gear and after torpedo tubes were removed by the time the Pacific War
broke out in favor of much increased antisubmarine
capability.
