Akiyama Monzo (1891-1943)

Akiyama Monzo was the Japanese rear admiral assigned to command the garrison of Kiska after it was captured from the Americans in 1942. After Attu fell, Akiyama did such a skillful job of organizing his troops for evacuation that it took just 55 minutes to load the troops onto Kimura's transport force when it raced into the harbor on 29 July 1943.

Akiyama was subsequently promoted to vice admiral and given command of 6 Base Force at Kwajalein, where he was killed during the American invasion in August of 1943.
