The Mamiya was a supply ship with
refrigerated
compartments capable of carrying provisions for 18,000 men for three
weeks and stalls for 50 head of cattle. She was also capable of
transporting a small number of aircraft on her afterdeck, and she had
unusually good communications equipment. She was sometimes used to
simulate an American battleship during fleet exercises.
Mamiya was operating with Combined
Fleet out of Yokosuka
when war broke out and was torpedoed
on 20 December 1944
off Hainan by Sealion.
