ANZAC was the Allied
headquarters
for the defense of eastern Australia
and New Zealand. The
command was activated on 15 January 1942 under Admiral Leary as a way to address concerns by the Australian government that, because the continent of Australia was not included in the ABDA command, and the U.S. Pacific command was located in distant Hawaii, the defense of Australia would fall into a command void. A portion of northwest Australia around Darwin was subsequently moved into the ABDA command. The naval component
of ANZAC (under Crace) later participated
in the Battle of the Coral Sea.
