Hansa Bay (144.833E 4.183S) is located on the northern coast of New Guinea between Madang and Wewak. Though undeveloped, the area was suitable for construction of airfields, and it became a Japanese rear area base with a sizable garrison. This included elements of 20 Division, which began arriving in early 1943. Plans were made for an invasion by 24 and 32 Divisions on 26 April 1944. However, Hansa Bay was bypassed by the Allies following the success of the Admiralties campaign.
