Kanoya (130.84E
31.39N) was an important Japanese
Army base and naval air station
on Kyushu. There was also a
small training airstrip at nearby Kasanohara.
The airfields (Kanoya and Kanoya East) were became
important kamikaze
bases and were heavily bombarded by B-29s during the Okinawa campaign. They were
also the first airfields on Japan strafed by P-51 Mustangs armed with
5" rockets, which had been
diverted from the original target of Atsugi. The city was an early
objective of OLYMPIC, the first stage of DOWNFALL.
