The Marcellos were originally equipped with eight torpedo tubes, but Commandante Alredo Cappellini was converted to a cargo submarine under German supervision and sent to the Far East in that role. She was seized by the Japanese when Italy capitulated and handed over to the Germans as UIT-24. When the Germans themselves capitulated, the Japanese took her over as I-503.
