Matsuyama commanded 64 Independent Infantry Group
at the start of the war. He took command of 56 Division under 15 Army in March 1942. His
division spearheaded the conquest of Burma.
The division remained in Burma until it was forced to retreat into Thailand in July 1945. Matsuyama executed a brilliant evacuation of 56 Division from under the noses of the advancing Chinese on 4 February 1945.
