Nishida commanded 1 Amphibious Brigade of 29 Division, which transferred from Manchuria to Eniwetok, arriving 4 January 1944. Finding the defenses unprepared, he worked his troops heavily to prepare fortifications. However, his battle plan relied on the doctrine of destroying the Americans at the water's edge, an increasingly futile exercise in the face of American naval firepower. He is assumed to have been killed during the American invasion of February 1944.
