Obata Nobuyoshi was serving with
Imperial Guards Division at
the outbreak of war in the Pacific. He was promoted to major
general and chief
of staff of 15 Army in March
1943, but was dismissed in less than two months after he described Mutaguchi's plan for U-Go
as bakamono ("a fool's
enterprise").
Obata was subsequently given an intelligence post in Manchuria. He successively served as chief of staff of Kwantung Defense Army (October 1944) and 44 Army (June 1945) and was captured by Russian troops in August. He was not repatriated until 1956.
