Overakker commanded the Middle
Sumatra Territorial Command when war broke out in the Pacific.
Though the senior Dutch officer in the island, he did not receive
command of all Dutch forces on Sumatra until the defense of Java was on the verge of collapse. He
attempted to hold out in the mountains
of northern Sumatra but was finally forced to surrender on 28 March 1942.
Overakker was executed at Fort de Kock in 1945 to prevent
his being liberated by the advancing Allies.
