Roberts commanded 23
Indian Division in the Imphal
campaign. He had studied at Camberley Staff College under Slim, who thought him likely
to become an outstanding officer and leader.
He had been flown in to Habbaniyeh in Iraq in 1941 and was credited
with saving the base with his
tenacious and aggressive defense. Following his success at Imphal, he
was promoted to corps command.
