The Sabers, or
"S" class destroyers, were completed
in 1918. Very modern when completed, with such refinements
as
enclosed gun
mounts, they were obsolete by the start of the Pacific War.
Some were
converted to minelayers,
while others were relegated to convoy
escort
duty, for which their speed and armament were adequate. Those sent
to
the Far East were probably all fitted for minelaying, but
otherwise
were little modernized and likely lacked even rudimentary radar.
The design speed of 36 knots was never reached in
builder's trials. Their speed by 1942 was probably significantly
less than 33 knots.
