Sakuma Takanobu was commandant of the Cavalry School when war broke out. He held staff positions through most of the war, including chief of staff of 14 Area Army in the Philippines. He later said of MacArthur that "I think that they were
excellent tactics. I say this without prejudice. If any other plans had
been used, the Americans would have had a very difficult time" (MacArthur 1966)
In 1944 or 1945 Sakuma was promoted to lieutenant general and given command of 55 Division under 28 Army in Burma. His division retreated across the Sittang on 8-10 August 1945.
