Sakuma Takanobu (Sakuma Tananobu in some sources) commanded 214 Regiment during the Japanese invasion of Burma in 1942. His regiment turned the British line on the Bilin and forced a retreat to the Sittang which left 17 Indian Division hors de combat. However, during the British retreat from Rangoon, Sakuma withdrew a battalion
that was firmly entrenched across the British line of retreat,
apparently because he was intent on reaching Rangoon and did not
realize the importance of the position.
Sakuma had risen to command of 24 Independent Mixed Brigade under 33 Army in Burma by 1944.
