"Pappy" Selleck commanded
the Philippine
71 Division at the
outbreak of war. An artillery
officer and graduate of the Command and General Staff School, he had
arrived in the Philippines on 23 October 1941 and had little time to
familiarize himself with the ground or his command prior to war breaking out. Part of his division
broke and
ran while covering the retreat into Bataan. The survivors, reinforced with a hodgepodge of other units, held the west coast of Bataan during the siege of the peninsula and the Battle of the Points. MacArthur eventually relieved him for "lack of aggression" in repelling the Japanese landings,
probably unjustly.
