Shiro was present as a cruiser commander at the battles of Midway and the Komandorski Islands. He commanded 101 Escort Squadron in the
final months of the war, but was killed
when his flagship, Kashii, was torpedoed by carrier aircraft during GRATITUDE, Halsey's raid into the South China Sea.
