Sugawara Michio was commissioned in the infantry in 1909, attended the Japanese War College, and became involved in Army aviation. He commanded 3 Air Division in south Indochina at the outbreak of war in the Pacific, and his air forces quickly established air supremacy over Malaya. His air division operated against the Netherlands East Indies and Burma during the Centrifugal Offensive. He returned to staff assignments in Tokyo in May 1943, but was given command of 6 Air Army at Fukuoka in December 1944. His forces redeployed to Kyushu in March 1945 to supply kamikazes to support the Navy during the Okinawa campaign.
