The Terror,
completed in 1942, was the U.S.
Navy's only purpose-built
minelayer. She could carry and emplace an enormous number of
mines. However,
converted minelayers had proven adequate and the hulls of the Terror's
two planned sisters were converted to badly-needed landing ships.
Terror was committed to the Pacific and transited the Panama Canal on 10 October 1943.
