The Catskills were laid down as Terror class minelayers, but were converted as vehicle landing ships by converting the mine deck to a vehicle deck with a very large ramp at the stern. They carried 44 DUKWS.
The ships were not considered a success, having limited cargo space and a disappointingly small vehicle capacity.
