Trincomalee (81.194E 8.567N)
was the most important British
naval base in the East Indian
Ocean.
It was still being developed at the beginning of the Pacific War, and
its
airstrip was a primitive affair
established on a former cricket green.
The port was raided by aircraft from Nagumo's carriers
during the Japanese
raid into the Indian
Ocean, 7 April 1942.
On 7 December 1941, the airfield based 22 Hurricanes and 9 Blenheims.
