Trincomalee (81.194E 8.567N) was the most important British naval base in the East Indian Ocean.  It was still being developed at the beginning of the Pacific War, and its airstrip was a primitive affair established on a former cricket green.  The port was raided by aircraft from Nagumo's carriers during the Japanese raid into the Indian Ocean, 7 April 1942.

On 7 December 1941, the airfield based 22 Hurricanes and 9 Blenheims.
