Amamiya commanded 24 Division in Manchuria from February 1944 to July 1944, when he and his division were transferred to Okinawa. Originally deployed to the southeast coast of the island, where the Japanese mistakenly expected the Americans to land, the division was redeployed to the critical Shuri Castle area where its strength was squandered in the futile counterattack of 4 May 1945. Amamiya's exact fate is uncertain but he certainly did not survive the Okinawa campaign.
