The Escambias were Maritime Commission T2-SE-A2
tankers built for the Navy as fleet
oilers. They differed from the Suamicos chiefly in having
somewhat more powerful turboelectric drive: The supply of the less
powerful drive used on the Suamicos
had become a production bottleneck, but there was excess production
capacity at General Electric for the more powerful drive.
