Fleet minesweepers were steel-hulled oceangoing vessels equipped to remove mines.  Since mine warfare took place in shallow water, where wooden-hulled coastal minesweepers were often perfectly adequate (and had the advantage of being nearly immune to magnetic mines), fleet minesweepers were often pressed into escort or other duties.
