The General Squiers
were completed from 1943-1945 as
troop transports based on Maritime
Commission
standard C4-S-A1 hulls. Consideration was given to fitting them out as attack transports, but they lacked the stability to carry more than 10 LCVPs
or the space for the accompanying troops and supplies. They were
therefore employed as point-to-point troop ships operated by the Navy
according to Army schedules.
The ships cost about $10.4 million apiece.
