William K. Harrill graduated from Annapolis in 1914 and completed flight training in 1921. He commanded Ranger before rising to flag rank and taking command of Task Group 58.4 under Mitscher. He proved unaggressive and had to be prodded into action by the aggressive "Jocko" Clark, with whom he was teamed for the air interdiction strikes against Iwo Jima early in the Marianas campaign. An attack of appendicitis on 28 June provided an excuse to ease him out of his combat billet.
