The KD3s were long-range submarines completed in 1927-1930. They differed from earlier types primarily in having strengthened hulls. There were two groups, the KD3A and KD3B groups, which were very similar except for bow form. They were somewhat dated at the outbreak of war, and most were later relegated to training duties.
