Maryborough (152.700E
25.533S) is a port on the
Mary River on the east coast
of Australia. Historically,
the town was a significant rail center and sugar growing area and the growth
of the railway led to significant industrial development. This was
aided by coal mining in the
nearby Howard and Torbalnea mines. The population was around
14,000 during the war years. The Walkers Limited shipyard was located here and
constructed Bathurst-class minesweepers.
