The Okinoshima was
a hybrid
minelayer/escort vessel built in 1936. She was with the Gilbert
Islands Force when
war broke out. She
was torpedoed on 11 May 1942 in
the Bismarck Sea by S-42 and capsized while being towed back to Rabaul. Repair ship Shoei Maru was torpedoed by a different submarine while under way to assist Okinoshima.
