The PC-461s were
completed in
1940-45. They were designed as well-armed coastal antisubmarine
warfare vessels, with an
intended speed of 22 knots. However, most never exceeded 18
knots, due to the
Navy’s proclivity for loading them down with additional
equipment. They were
relatively nimble but tended to roll in heavy seas, a tendency that
never
seemed to bother the U.S. Navy.
A total of about 362 steel-hulled patrol craft were constructed during the war.
