The PGM-9s were units of the PC-461 class converted on the ways by removing all antisubmarine warfare gear in favor of addional machine guns, a 60mm mortar, and SO-8 radar. Originally meant to operate with PT boats, they proved too slow for this role, and usually worked with minesweepers instead.
Some 24 units were so converted between July 1944 and February 1945.
