The Tryons were Maritime
Commission
standard C2 cargo ships
converted to evacuation transports. They could transport 1274 troops to
a landing beach, then evacuate 700 casualties.
Their most distinctive features were a large superstructure with a
solarium surrounding the small funnel. They were fitted out with C3 machinery, boosting their
speed to 18 knots.
