Gill commanded 32 Division
at Aitape during the Battle of
the
Driniumor River. Here his
perceived lack of aggressiveness probably ruled him out in the
minds of Krueger and MacArthur for
promotion to command of a corps.
Gill later commanded the division in the Philippines campaign, at Leyte and Luzon. Here he was hospitalized for exhaustion after he had physically abused a number of officers and enlisted men, and likely retained his command only because of the patronage of Griswold.
