Katamura commanded 54 Division at Himeji in August 1941. His unit
deployed to Java and then Burma, arriving January 1944. He was
forced to retreat out of the Arakan in late August 1944 but was given
command of 15 Army
on 30 August. He was outfought by Slim and suffered the near
complete collapse of his command in April 1945, the remnants retreating
into Thailand.
