The Yamabiko Maru was completed as a passenger steamer for the Yamashita Kisen K.K. Line in 1938. She was requisitioned by the Japanese Navy and converted to an "auxiliary specially installed construction warship" just before war broke out in the Pacific. She was at Takao with 3 Fleet when war broke out.
Yamabiko Maru was torpedoed on 10 January 1944 by submarine Steelhead off the Bonins. An attempt to salvage her failed when she broke apart at the harbor entrance at Hachijo Jima and her tow ship was itself torpedoed.
