The Artemises
were completed in 1944-45 at the Providence, Rhode Island, shipyard of
Walsh-Kaiser Co, Inc. They
were given the Maritime
Commission standard type number
S4-SE2-BE1. Manned by Navy crews, they were designed to land cargo on
the beach
during amphibious assaults.
They were also capable of transporting a small number of troops. Their
rather shallow draft of 16' (4.9m)
was well-suited for coming close to shore to land men and equipment.
